Alicia Adams Alpaca's Gorgeous New Collection for RH

NYS: What does it mean for your brand to collaborate with RH and be included in such a high profile campaign?
Alicia Adams of Alicia Adams Alpaca: Restoration Hardware largely integrates some of the most inventive and refined designers from around the globe. Our simple and elegant products were a natural fit for RH. It has been an honor to be a part of such a renowned name and we look forward to the future.
NYS: What are a few of your favorite products from the RH collection?
Alicia Adams: We have a handful of products with Restoration Hardware that embody the sustainable and lush alpaca fleece. One of the favorites is the Pom-Pom Throw. It's a great size to cozy up with. Another would be the Eyelash Scarf. It is perfect for year-round weather around the world!
NYS: How did you get involved in raising alpacas?
Alicia Adams: Originally, Daniel and I spoke about having our own winery. It was when Daniel traveled to Australia to look at vineyards and wineries where he first encountered an alpaca. He thought they were fascinating. Within 24 hours of his return home we were sinking our teeth into all the possibilities that could arise from breeding alpacas. We agreed it would bring us both the challenges we sought after and fulfill our longing for a simpler, more grounded life.
NYS: Why alpacas? What do their coats offer that other wools don't?
Alicia Adams: Alpacas are naturally hypoallergenic and are more sustainable than their other furry friends. The Alpaca fibers contain microscopic air pockets, which is great for insulation and allows for breathability. The durability of the fiber lasts longer than most any other luxury fiber, including other wools, cashmere, and silk.
NYS: Your company is a family affair. What roles do your family members play?
Alicia Adams: Daniel and I make a great team. He handles more of the business side while I create and make our visions come to life. The children love being involved. They have a connection with the Alpacas and enjoy helping out on the farm.
NYS: Tell me a little bit about the Peruvian artisans you employ, and why that's at the heart of your business.
Alicia Adams: Our business has always remained true to the technique that is embedded in the Peruvian artisans. We firmly believe that the partnership we have with them is a balanced "give & take." Being able to support the locals all while sharing our collections with the world has been most fulfilling.
NYS: Where do you go for inspiration for your designs?
Alicia Adams: My family, our heritages and our experiences unite to make one big melting pot of inspiration in itself. New York's Hudson Valley has also been a catalyst. You get to meet people from all over.
NYS: In addition to launching your first collection with RH for Holiday 2017, what inspired your own brand's Rainbow Collection, and why is it important to you?
Alicia Adams: Community, love and tolerance are of the highest importance for the world to be able to live together in peace. We wanted to create a collection to show solidarity with minorities, including the LGBTQ community. We chose GLSEN.org to receive 10% of all sales from the collection. GLSEN's mission is to create safe and affirming schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
How do you see your company evolving, and what does the future hold for you?
Alicia Adams: Alpaca is still at the beginning of its revival path, which is both exciting to be a part of and to share. Remaining true to our roots is very important. In doing so, we will continue to deliver high quality products and be involved in every step of creating a collection. Our family business has huge potential for growth. It's across the board from in home but also in accessories, cruise collection and apparel.... We are excited for the opportunities that lie ahead. Especially with Restoration Hardware, maintaining a strong partnership is on the forefront.
