Porcelanosa, a global luxury tile, kitchen, and bath retailer recently opened a North American flagship showroom in Manhattan's Flatiron District. The 18,000-square-foot showroom is a model of interactive technology with six floors sporting everything from a bar, lounge, cafe, and a materials library with touch screen devices that service the art of presentation and retail design. Porcelanosa even plans to have conferences and workshops in the bulding. The British architecture and design firm Foster + Partners took on the task of designing the space—even restoring the building's historic neoclassical exterior. To help with the interior metamorphosis, the firm tapped New York-based architectural millwork company Moddworxx to fabricate a few custom pieces including a retractable ceiling made of Porcelanosa's KRION® Solid Surface. The ingenious ceiling hides heating and cooling systems while adding a unique look in keeping with the Porcelanosa's ingenuity.

In a period where buildings seem to spring up overnight, it is wonderful to see a historic bulding restored—and in a manner emphasizing efficiency and sustainability. Foster + Partners' key focus on reducing carbon emissions and including systems for reducing water consumption—among many other sustainable practices–have left the building up for LEED Gold certification.

Porcelanosa is located at the junction of Broadway and Fifth Avenue with 25th Street.
