Principal and Creative Director, Angela Harris, Dishes on Trio Environments' Design Projects

NYS: When and why was TRIO Environments founded?
Angela Harris: TRIO was founded in 1999 out of pure love for beautiful spaces, and of course, divine intervention. The idea that design could be used as an outlet of self-expression, and that I could help our clients in the same manner, made me very happy.
NYS: What are you known for? Tell us about your projects.
Angela Harris: We are known for delivering timeless, relevant, and unexpected design in the best kind of way. We work on many multi-family, hospitality, builder and residential projects so we are very much a market-driven design firm that loves to question and push any creative boundary we can. Designing within creative limitations really isn't our style.
NYS: What kind of sustainable design principles do you integrate into your practice?
Angela Harris: We work with only the best of manufactures, such as Nourison, Phillips Collection, and TileBar to deliver designs that are not only beautiful but also responsible. These partners help us to fuse together artful, intentional design aesthetic with sustainable and wellness principles. We work mostly with furniture manufacturing, programming, textile contents, lighting, water, air, and material substance just to name a few areas of concentration when we design a space.
NYS: What are some of your visual merchandising projects like? How do you approach them?
Angela Harris: They are fabulous! Visual merchandising through the design process is one of our firms most creative outlets. It drives us to push our creative ideas while staying within a budget and resonating with a target market. We approach them much like a retailer would approach their merchandising. Our job is to drive sales through the design process so merchandising becomes a critical piece of a successful project. We love every minute of it because it is the perfect marriage between design, branding, marketing, and budgeting.
NYS: Tell us about the model homes you create! How does your approach differ when you are working on them?
Angela Harris: It is a complete love affair. Working with our builders and developers affords us an amazing opportunity to balance the creative work with the business side of the industry. It is a dream come true. We never get locked into one idea, but rather many ideas which takes a lot of collaboration, communication, and creativity of a highly skilled team working together over an extended period.
NYS: What are you working on now that you are excited about?
Angela Harris: We are working on so many things that are exciting.
First, we are in the process of expanding the TRIO brand by managing the entire creative process for our builders and developers. This allows us to oversee architecture, interior design, product design, and merchandising. This is a huge step because it provides a much more holistic approach. Not only are we designing the interiors, but we are designing everything from the overall house elevations/plan, interiors, and even most of the products featured. This is all done through the perspective of a designer's eye, and as a result, we are delivering a more thoughtful, better home. This was a huge benefit to our builders because it ultimately positions the builder with a more competitive product in the marketplace.
In addition, we are continuing to work on multiple multi-family projects, model homes, clubhouses, sales centers, commercial offices, hospitality, and a few high-end residential projects that we are very excited about. Our projects span the globe which allows us the luxury of traveling, and that is always exciting.
