What happens when one icon meets another? A special edition, hand-painted line of kitchen appli- ances, of course! SMEG, founded in Italy in 1948, has teamed up with another famous Italian brand, Dolce
& Gabbana
, to create a limited-edition version of the famed FAB28 fridge, transforming it into a wildly colorful work of art. Dolce & Gabbana hired Sicilian artists to decorate the iconic refrigerator with hand-painted lemons, medieval knights, battle scenes, and graphic representations of the iconic Sicilian cart. The works are evocative of the poetic marionette theaters popular throughout Sicily, and they also call to mind the classic design aesthetic and sartorial style of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The fantastically colored refrigerators made their debut at Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2016, and now the two Italian companies have announced Sicily My Love, a line of small appliances with the same colorful motifs: lemons, prickly pear, acanthus leaves, and geometric pat- terns inspired by the folk art of Sicily. The line includes tea kettles, blenders, toasters, and stand mixers, and will be available in October.
